SOUTH BAY’s MARKETING SUCKS!

And in the South Bay, of which I have been a resident for over 10 years, we have (particularly in our area):

2 Vons
2 Ralphs
2 Kohls
2 Pier 1 Imports (with a third along the way)
1 Henry’s (with a second on the way)
3 Rite Aid
3 Panda Express
3 McDonald's [Not even my favorite. I prefer Jack in the Box or Burger King. McDonald's rarely changes its menu. Burger King has better burgers than McDonald's. Jack in the Box has more variety and is always introducing something new.]

The Payless Shoe Source chain is becoming like Starbucks Coffee: one on every corner. [There are other good shoe stores that can be put in the South Bay besides Payless, like DSW.]
Does it make sense to have all this duplication? Especially when they're all relatively close to each other?

When it comes to marketing, South Bay’s SUCKS!

It would be nice to have a nearby Albertson’s or Food-4-Less. A Trader Joe's and/or Whole Foods would compliment our Henry's.

Fine-dining? Miguel's and Island's? YUCK!! More like crappy semi-casual dining. That’s why Screg and I and my friend "T" usually go West or North to eat at places in Mission Valley, La Jolla, Hillcrest or Downtown San Diego.

But where were Tower Records and Borders and Soup Plantation years ago? I guess the marketing execs ASSUMED that South Bay residents don't like to listen to music, don't like to read, and don't like to eat healthy. Well, at least a Soup Plantation opened a couple of months ago. But prior to that, the last healthy restaurant we had in the area was Soup Exchange [which folded several years ago].

And I know that we have Target, WalMart and K-Mart, but what about a Homegoods, Stein Mart, Burlington Coat Factory or Cost Plus? Give us something more besides just Kohl’s & Pier 1.

Well, one of the largest malls in San Diego County www.otayranchtowncenter.com has just opened (literally) next door. [BTW we'll also be getting a smaller shopping village www.sudprop.com/development/vwe.] This large mall has close to 100 stores and restaurants, including Barnes & Noble bookstore and PF Chang, Cheesecake Factory, King’s Fish House, Romano’s Macaroni Grill, California Pizza Kitchen & Chili’s. For all you campers, bikers and hikers, there’s REI. And for the movie goers, there's AMC theatres. I’ve been following the status of this new mall through their website and signed-up for their special grand opening offers and received a free $20 gift card at Lucy’s. [In the smaller shopping village we'll be getting a Trader Joe’s, a Border’s, Pat & Oscars, Brigantine, Pei Wei, Busalacchi’s Trattoria Fantastica, Broken Yolk restaurant and another Henry’s.]

During the grand opening, Screg and I took a leisurely evening stroll to the new mall. As we made our way thru the crowds of excited and wide-eyed shoppers, gawky teenagers, kids, whistling traffic directors(?), and dogs, who did we run into but Shogun, and Lotus. [Apparently, there was leather jacket calling Shogun's name. Or was it that bread store?]

Nothing really grabbed us. We don’t like or shop at stores like Banana Republic. We’re not into brand names nor the prices that are found within. I know that their clothes will last and never go out of style, but I’m a trendy kinda of girl that likes her outlet and bargain stores.

I decided to take advantage of my $20 gift card from Lucy’s. [OF NOTE: When we first walked into Lucy’s, I was asked by one of the workers: "Is this your first experience?" NOT: "Is this your first time shopping here?" OR "Have you shopped here before?" BUT "Is this your first experience?" WTF?] Lucy's is a work-out/active-wear apparel store for women and (I must say) a HIGH-ASS STORE! I would not pay between $60-$85 for a pair of pants or top. Ultimately, I ended up using the giftcard towards a pastel blue t-shirt off the sale rack for $20.

As with all things, the new mall hype will die down eventually. I remember when Horton Plaza, Plaza Bonita & the North County Mall were the happenin' places. I know Screg and I will be regulary beating a path to the AMC theatres.

Are the researchers and marketing execs getting it right this time? We shall see...

so it's called "otay ranch town center". hrmm.. i dislike the notion that a town center is a mall. i can appreciate the convenience of malls but a real town center should be more than that. hrmm... may be my next post.

rememer, this is not a "mall" but this new otay ranch town center is called a "lifestyle center" - i'm being sarcastic. all articles touting this new shopping center have been beating this factoid into our heads. it's still basically an outdoor mall with a calculated "small town" feel where every store has a different facade. a fake main street if you will.

i finally saw this new place a few days ago...i got parking behind anthropologie, which was still being fixed up and not open yet. i strolled around to see what was there.

the only stores i see myself shopping at are: ann taylor (i like their silk shells for work and their dressy items, but on SALE not full-ass price), ann taylor loft (i like this more than the regular ann taylor-- i like their silk shells and sale shit like suits which really help when i have a coupon), and banana republic (sale only - i'm more of an outlet shopper). the other stores i have no interest---REI? i hate the outdoors/hiking/etc... What the hell is POZ? and there were some other stores i'd never even heard of...mostly high end places. i'm such a cheap ass. i love me my target. fk macy's.

although i do like limited, express (these 2 stores are represented at this new center), & banana republic, i'm don't consider myself a label whore. i do like clothes that look good, are made well, won't go out of style, and that don't scream "insert label here" all over it. example, coach bags. i know they're well made, but shit, i feel disgusted by ubiquitous and blatant displays of conspicuous consumerism. does anyone really need Gucci or Coach sneakers? ralph lauren socks for crying out loud!

i don't shop at macy's. i don't like pf changs. macaronig rill? sounds like boring ameican food to me. cheese cake factory? i'll pass. sorry to sound like a negative a-hole....

the MALL is pretty and new, that's for sure, but it's a sterile and artificial prettiness that seems orchestrated to steer us into their hallowed stores to buy, buy, buy.

oh, and lotus and shogun mentioned that they noticed that the (for lack of a better word) "OLD PEOPLE STORES" were segregated in a far, far, far outpost...these stores include some wine place, panera bakery, and the farty women's clothing stores CHICO's and COLDWATER CREEK. chico's has large flowy clothes for women who don't have a shape or if they do, they hide it with their unattractice cuts of clothing. i think those types of clothes make women look fat and slovenly. coldwater creek is also for the older demographic. the type of clothes your uptight librarian would wear in la jolla or perhaps an older 'stepford wife' type of woman. about as conservative and dowdy as TALBOTS. i won't be venturing in lawrence welk land to shop.

for the kiddies, they do have gymboree and the children's place. i think gymboree is too "matchy matchy". tc's clothes come from Tar-jay or old navy. gymboree is too calculated and boring for me. i prefer going to the children's place outlet in san ysidro. better bargains to be had...

that said, i came, i went, but i only bought 1 lipstick at sephora from a guy who wore more makeup than me (and who applied it quite expertly i might add).

you'll be glad to know that trader joe's will be opening behind the eastlake target in march 2007. you own't have to go all the way to henry's. now if they could only open up a whole foods.

worth another trip? not anytime soon.

too bad about tower records. they went bankrupt. all two stores left in s.d. are having sales to get rid of their shit.

i friend of mine went to check out the new mall and couldn't find an air hockey table, which is like, minus 500 points on the rating mall scale...

and that's all i got to say about that...

After walking thru the mall, the only things I care about are the AMC theatres and the bookstore...

Perhaps I could give people something to talk about if I were to take a swig out of one of the many dog bowls sitting outside the stores...

TC and I were just there yesterday. I wanted to use a coupon I had for Bath and Body Works and also to check out their popper fountain.

We noticed that every storefront had a silver dog bowl in front but there wasn't any water in them at the time (it was before the 10 am opening). I wonder who puts water in them? The store employees or one designated water bowl filler? I guess dogs don't care about germs from other dogs.

Wow they couldn't find an air hockey table????

I'm sure it was right next to the pochinko machines and bumper pool tables.

Finally got a chance to do a drive through of the new mall. It's pretty wide spread. I went down the main drag just to see how it works. I don't think I'll ever try parking there. It looks like it'll get jammed to easily and I could just as well park by Macy's and walk it.

I'll probably take a peek into REI one of these days. (Of course, without Canine since she could care less about that place). Otherwise, I'll have to wander about a bit to see if anything interests me. Any idea on what the last building in the old-foagies section will be?

Ok, with all that said, should I make a special trip to this "town center" on my next trip out there?

good idea, totu..

hot fudge, let's go shopping in the old fogies and fat ladies sections to help boost the socially unacceptable stores. maybe mom jeans will be not so discriminated against, seeing as how some of us have no choice but to wear them...

Mikshir,
I think the only stores/places you'll probably like & benefit from in this Town Center are:
1. Barnes&Noble (you love to read!)
2. REI (active clothes for travel)
3. AMC (you’re a moviegoer)
4. Macy's (Nice clothes for men)
5. Macaroni Grill (Good food!)

Bert,
Coldwater Creek will have their own spa; cool! I'm a bit curious but I bet their pricey. Why do I have the feeling that their clientele will probably be women
in our parents age group considering the style of their clothes.

Mulysa,
Great pix by the way and Plus Size Rule!
